Indigo Spotted Work Shirt
This is a work shirt made of indigo black spotted dobby fabric. Aiming for a color tone that resembles layering black dye over indigo fabric, we used thread dyed with a combination of natural and synthetic indigo dyes, plus black thread, and then adjusted the number of thread colors that appear on the surface through weaving to achieve the desired color tones.

OUR CHALLENGE
SAMURAI COTTON FARM
This project started with the dream of creating things 100% organically and domestically with our very own hands. The cotton would be grown and hand-harvested by us, and then used to make the highest-quality clothing possible. It sounds like a simple enough idea, but it’s extremely difficult in practice.

15oz HEAVY WEIGHT BACK-SATIN BAKER PANTS
This fabric is an original back satin selvedge made of thick yarn, sulfide-dyed in an olive color and then tightly woven. The selvedge has our silver lame thread to represent the Japanese sword, and can be seen on the sides of these pants. These are based on military baker pants, with a sleek silhouette that isn’t too wide. The iron pine tree buttons are tucked to better match the heavy fabric, and you can look forward to years of fading as you wear these pants in.

15oz HEAVY WEIGHT CHINO TROUSERS
Classic heavy chino pants made from our original sulfur-dyed selvedge chino. We’ve used thick #6 yarn here (something not normally found in chino fabric), woven together at the limits of an old vintage shuttle loom. Because of the use of sulfide dyes, these will fade beautifully over time. On the inside you can see our original jacquard material which features traditional Japanese “Kamon”, or family crests, and we’ve used tucked buttons (iron pine tree buttons) to work well with the heavy fabric.

18oz Japanese cotton denim made
The Japanese color “kinari” roughly translates as ecru or beige, and is a beautiful natural hue achieved here by keeping and using all the little bits of cotton stems and leaves that are usually thrown away. We’ve created an original thread that retains all this natural goodness, and have left out any kind of dyeing or bleaching in order to preserve the look and feel of the original cotton itself. We then wove these natural threads on vintage looms, resulting in a gorgeous ‘kinari’ color and a texture that is at once heavy, uneven, yet eminently wearable. A texture not to be found anywhere else.
